I recently remade an updated copy of my 2014 sculpture Birds vs. Squirrels. The old sculpture was badly damaged while on public display, so I took the opportunity to completely redesign the cute little squirrels and bird faces to better suit my style. It is now on tour as part of my traveling exhibition, Brick Planet.

In this sculpture, a birdfeeder (filled with tiny round LEGO bricks!) sits at the corner of a white picket fence. The enterprising squirrels are racing to figure out how to get all the food before the birds do.

It’s a battle of craftiness! Who will be the first to consume all the bird food!?
Building it
The old design looked a bit too blocky in retrospect, although it was done nearly 10 years earlier and I did not have the same selection of parts. Newer LEGO shapes now allow me to create cuter faces and softer more gentle swooping lines.

The sculpture was built in my Amsterdam studio in late 2024. As always, I used regular off-the-shelf LEGO pieces that are available in any toy store. Every LEGO piece is connected together the way that LEGO bricks are meant to be used, without cheating anything into place and without custom shapes or colors.
The sculpture is fully glued and steel-reinforced for safe travel, and since 2025 it been touring with one of my traveling exhibitions. Click on the link in the description for more info about what cities it will be visiting, and see if it’s coming to your town!
