This was the first large-scale car that I've built. It is 12-studs wide and roughly the same scale as the LEGO company's theme park "mini land" models.
I made it for display in the
What would you make international design gallery that the LEGO company had on display in June 2003. It was built solely from pieces in the Make & Create ("LEGO Designer") sets.
The biggest challenge I faced was the limited selection of pieces. Often I would not have enough red pieces to build the model the way I wanted, and I would have to re-build. The entire rear bed of the pickup was done very haphazardly, since I was really running out of pieces at that point.
I would have liked to have made the grille and bumper with shiny "silver" pieces, but the LEGO Designer kits did not come with very many silver pieces, so grey had to do.
Here is the interior of the truck. There's a car radio (it was invented already; I checked!), a gear shift, and a gas pedal.
I'm not too happy with the way the back came out; I wouldn't have made the lip of the bed 2 bricks thick, and I would have rounded out the backs of the fenders more, but I was just plain out of red bricks.
The original inspiration to build this classic car was the curvy and sloped red pieces that made their way into the fenders.
Under contsruction, with a different hood and bumper.
I often had to take large sections apart and start over becuase I limited myself to the pieces in the LEGO "Designer" kits.
Here is a picture of the real thing.
