“Leila” is the 8th portrait in my Rainbow Kids collection, which celebrates the simple joy of being a child. The collection features fictional children across a spectrum of ages, ethnicities, and genders, built in a spectrum of full bold punchy color using thousands of LEGO pieces.

These pieces evolved from my foray into making bombastic colorful sculptures after having created hundreds of portraits over the past 20 years: I have merged the two concepts into one.

I’ve been incredibly excited about the new LEGO DOTS and LEGO ART product lines ever since they were released in 2020, and I am excited to be creating works using the expanded color pallet that these provide.

Leila began as an original digital illustration, which was then re-drawn as pixel art and finally built with over 27,000 LEGO® pieces. The portrait measures 45″ x 60″ (150 x 115cm).
