As a parallel to human parenting, the design of the sculpture follows a curved line that starts with the walking, unhatched duckling on one end of the sculpture, through the baby ducklings trailing their father, culminating up at the turned head of the father duck, looking out protectively to survey his surroundings. The gesture of this design is meant to display a progression from childhood whimsy through adult responsibility.
