Part of Animal Super Powers

An exhibition of sculptures built with LEGO bricks

This sculpture is the second-largest I have ever created; it is nearly 7 feet wide and 5 feet tall, and contains 68,827 LEGO pieces.  It is also the most visually intricate sculpture I’ve ever created, and the most time-consuming to have ever designed.

Building it

This sculpture is the second-largest and most visually intricate sculpture I have ever created.   It contains 68,827 LEGO pieces and took me over 625 hours to design and build.

I built two copies of it at the same time, which amounted to about 1200 hours of work and 137,000 LEGO pieces over the course of five months!

Other than the head and abdomen, the entire sculpture is only about 2 inches thick (as thin as half an inch in some places).  It’s supported by a hidden metal armature, which is custom-welded to incredibly precise dimensions so that it will fit perfectly in between the LEGO pieces (see below).  Every LEGO piece is glued one-by-one as the sculpture is built.

I spent over one full day of work (8 hours) designing the head.  First I made a “blockier” head (below; head lying down) as a rough “sketch” to get the overall size and proportions to my liking.  Then, using lots of photos that I found online, I created a more detailed version to the same scale as the blocky “sketch”.

After the sculpture was finished, it needed to head out of my Brooklyn studio and off to our crating facility to be fitted for a foam-lined custom traveling exhibition crate.
