This mural is part of an exploration of color and texture with LEGO bricks. It’s an evolution of my recent foray into making bombastic colorful sculptures, hundreds of portraits over the past 20 years, rainbow kids with a new expanded LEGO color palette, and nature-themed exhibitions..

The mural is a 2-dimensional interpretation of part of my sculpture Wildebeest and Zebra set atop a blast of painted rainbow color.

My original sculpture of a zebra was inspired by my trip to the Serengeti during the great wildebeest migration. I was taken by the Zebras and how they protected the wildebeest, while gaining the benefit of protection from the herds.

This mural began as an original digital illustration drawn as pixel art and then built with over 27,000 LEGO® pieces. The piece measures 45″ x 60″ (150 x 115cm).

Build it yourself!
You can build this too! My traveling exhibition Brick Planet features an interactive art station with a paint-by-number style canvas where you and other visitors can help build a new copy of this mural and several others, for everyone to enjoy! Check to see if Brick Planet is visiting your city and come by and have fun!
