About SeanSean Kenney is a renowned, award-winning artist and "professional kid" who uses LEGO pieces to design and create contemporary sculpture for high-profile clients, major corporations, and venues around the globe for over 15 years.
Sean's multiple-award-winning traveling exhibitions have been touring North America, Asia, and Europe since 2012, heralded as "an incredible exhibition" by Lonely Planet that Vogue says is "bound to make visitors stare".
He has authored 9 acclaimed children's books, guest-judged a reality TV show, and has been featured in publications including The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, The Washington Post, Forbes, PBS Arts, BBC Arts, NHK Japan, and countless more.
So... why LEGO?LEGO is so intrinsically fun and whimsical, and Sean thinks the toy reflects his personality well; he's structured and organized and logical, but silly and playful. What better medium than a primary-colored children's toy based on straight lines, rules, and math?
As an art medium, Sean loves seeing people's reactions to what he creates. LEGO makes it inherently playful, which he loves. Art doesn't have to be so serious all the time!
How do you do that?Sculptures and portraits are more than just accurate shapes; they have to capture the essence of the original; they have to have a spark, a spirit, a life. Sean loves to put himself into his work, to try to get the glint of a child's eye, to bring a city block to life, or to imbue humor or anecdote into a piece.
Most of his projects start out as pencil sketches, many end up with serious engineering inside, and in between it all he loves to sit down with a big pile of LEGO pieces and just figure it all out. After all, that's what you did as a kid, right?
Sean and The LEGO CompanySean doesn't work for The LEGO Company ... he's just their best customer! He is not affiliated, sponsored, endorsed, paid, employed, licensed, contracted, (or whatever!) by them in any way.
In 2005 Sean became the first person in the world whom The LEGO Group offered a bulk purchase account. They officially recognized him for his skills and proficiency for 14 years, and he continues to maintain an informal working relationship with the company to this day.
